The backing is the material to which the adhesive layer is applied. It gives tape its shape and influences how it handles, tears, stretches and can be removed. The right backing depends on the application and, together with the adhesive, forms the tape construction.
PP and BOPP film
Polypropylene film is widely used as a backing for packaging tape. BOPP stands for biaxially oriented polypropylene: the film is oriented in two directions. This backing enables a lightweight, dimensionally stable tape suitable for sealing packaging.
The film, thickness and adhesive together determine the roll’s characteristics, tear resistance, unwind behaviour and noise level. For manual or machine sealing, choose a version suited to the carton, dispenser and packaging line.
PVC film
PVC film is flexible and can be used in various tape constructions. Applications include marking tape and other flexible tapes. The quality of the film and adhesive determines how the tape behaves during use and removal.
Paper
Paper backings are available in self-adhesive and water-activated tapes, with or without reinforcement. Paper can be torn by hand and has a distinctive appearance. Moisture resistance, tensile strength and handling characteristics vary according to the construction.
For packaging, relevant factors include whether the tape is applied manually or by machine and whether a reinforced version is required.
PET and polyester
PET and polyester backings are used when dimensional stability and tensile strength are important. They form the basis of various technical and reinforced tapes. The chosen thickness and construction determine how the tape can be positioned and applied.
PE film
Polyethylene film is flexible and readily conforms to shapes. PE backings are used in protective tapes and film applications, among other uses. Adhesion depends on the film surface and the selected adhesive.
Fabric, mesh and filament
Fabric and mesh backings combine textile fibres with a coating and adhesive. They are used in products such as duct tape and gaffer tape. The backing influences flexibility, tearability and strength.
Filament tape contains reinforcing fibres running in one or more directions. These fibres help the tape withstand high tensile loads in the intended direction.
Aluminium foil
Aluminium foil tape is used where a metal foil is required as a functional layer. The foil and adhesive are selected to suit the substrate and the conditions in which the tape is used.
Foam
Foam tape adds spacing and compressibility to a bond. Double-sided foam tape is used, for example, for mounting and accommodating small variations between surfaces. The thickness, hardness and adhesive determine how the tape responds to loads.
Abrasive grit and slip resistance
Anti-slip tape has a textured surface containing abrasive grit. The grit structure provides grip where additional slip resistance is needed, such as on stair treads and walkways. The backing and adhesive are selected to suit the surface and application.
Choosing the backing
The same adhesive can perform differently on different backings. That is why Van Loenhout Products considers the complete construction: backing, adhesive, thickness, surface and working method.
