Choosing and applying the right tape

Choosing the right tape starts with the application. What does the tape need to do, which material will it be applied to and how will it be used? Once these questions are clear, the backing, adhesive type and dimensions can be selected accordingly.

Start with the purpose

First determine whether the tape needs to seal packaging, mount components, bundle materials, protect a surface, mark a route or provide extra grip. The purpose determines which properties take priority.

Assess the substrate

The material, texture and surface condition influence contact between the adhesive and the surface. A smooth, clean and dry surface allows the tape to make good contact. Dust, moisture, oil, coatings and rough textures affect adhesion.

For plastics, painted surfaces and delicate finishes, both adhesion and removal matter. Match the tape to the surface and test the complete working method on the material you use.

Consider the loads

Tape can be subjected to tension, peeling, shear, bending, vibration or impact. Determine which loads will occur during use and how long the bond needs to hold. This helps you select the right adhesive and backing properties.

Environment and duration of use

Temperature, moisture, sunlight and ageing affect both the tape and the substrate. The time between application and removal can also make a difference. Choose the tape based on the conditions in which it will be applied and used.

Applying tape correctly

Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Position the tape without unnecessary tension or creases and apply even pressure. A roller or suitable tape dispenser helps ensure contact across the full width of the tape.

After application, allow time for the bond to develop before subjecting the tape to its full load. For machine application, the roll, dispenser, line speed and settings must be properly matched.

Removal and checking

Remove removable tape in a controlled manner, using a suitable angle and speed. The tape, substrate, dwell time and environment together determine the result. For delicate paint, lacquer or materials, first test the complete working method in an inconspicuous area.

Assess a tape in the actual application. This shows how the combination of substrate, application, loading and removal performs in your process.
